Inspiration Behind Girls of the Promised Land

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) know that The Book of Mormon teaches of Christ and how we can become like him.
“(The Book of Mormon) Which is to show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers; and that they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever—And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations.” (Book of Mormon Title Page)
Growing up my family and I would read The Book of Mormon.
We read about Nephi getting the brass plates, King Benjamin’s inspiring address to his people, the missions of Alma and Amulek, the striping warriors and more.
Each account taught us about overcoming trials and hardships and how to strengthen our relationship to Jesus Christ.
However, sometimes I would have to ask:
Where were all of the girls?
Didn’t they play a part in The Book of Mormon?
Girls In The Book of Mormon

The answer to that question is YES!
They played a crucial part in The Book of Mormon, but like so many other past followers of Christ, male and female, we don’t know their names.
However, they were there and they were important!
Hence, the inspiration of the Girls of the Promised Land Book series.
Sometimes it is hard to, “liken all scriptures unto us,” (1 Nephi 19:23) when we see the people and events as two-dimensional figures that always seemed to do what was right or characters who didn’t have any flaws.
Sometimes it is hard to find things in common with people that seem so different from people today.
How could events thousands of years ago possibly compare to those we experience now?
However, an All-Knowing God knows that human nature is the same today as it was at the beginning.
Although packaged differently, we face the same types of temptations that our predecessors faced long ago.
That is why he commanded prophets of old to write down their cautionary accounts so that we can see how good and evil still compete for the souls of the people during our time.
The goal of Girls of the Promise Land is to give the reader a closer glimpse into the lives, thoughts, feelings, and motivations of the people that lived during the time of The Book of Mormon, especially through the perspective of girls and women.
Through this series, I hope to make these historical figures become alive to the readers of the latter days.
To see that they weren’t really different from us.
They had to deal with the same types of trials and hardships that we face today.
Moreover, it is my goal to highlight the roles of daughters, sisters, wives, and friends during this time in history which helped contribute either to their people’s salvation or to their destruction.

Meet Pamela Harrington
Pamela Harrington is eclectic pursuer of knowledge, writer of various genres of literature, illustrator, musician, goat farmer, and most importantly mother of some amazing children.
She and her family live in a small town in Arizona where the number of cows and sheep greatly outnumber the residents who call the beautiful river valley home.
Growing up she had major struggles of letting feelings of personal inadequacy and low self-esteem cripple her until she learned and internalized one of the greatest secrets of life, don’t let circumstances and outside voices determine who you are.
She now empowers other people with that message and helps individuals realize they have the power to change their circumstances and become the people they want to become.
