Lessons From 1 Nephi Chapter 1

On the surface people may see The Book of Mormon merely as a historical account of a people who lived long ago.

However, it is more than that.

It is a cautionary tale, a guide book written from the trials and experiences of others to guide us on how to live in the world today.

“I, Nephi, having neem norm of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days.”

A Timeless Account

Although Nephi and Lehi lived long ago, they faced the same nature of trials that we do today.

How do we follow God?

How do we treat our family?

What do we do when we are faced with temptations and trials?

The Book of Mormon was written for our times to help us navigate through the obstacles and tests we all face.

Although our trials may take different forms than those of old they all have one thing in common.

They are meant to try the hearts of men and women to see if they will stay true to our Savior.

Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail.

Although we may stumble and fall, the Lord offers His power to help us get back up again.

Despite the impending destruction Nephi’s people faced throughout their existence, he leaves us with a message of hope, that if we follow Jesus Christ he can make us mighty, “even unto the power of deliverance”.

“Behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.”
